What do you think of the new Sherlock Holmes episode (The Abominable Bride) for this Christmas?
The morning started with amusing comments from BBC London
Radio broadcaster about the new Sherlock on BBC One. Some people loved the
drama while the others totally got lost.
5 mins later I opened BBC iPlayer and watched this Christmas
special of Sherlock myself. My conclusion is that I like this new episode! (Sorry
for those confused Brits.)
I have to confess that I was very disappointed with the last
season (series 3) when Sherlock was back to life and wondered around through
superstitious “technology”. That last season was just a collage of the stories
from previous seasons plus bunch of nonsense with no relevancy to Sherlock’s
original profession, i.e. a detective who solves mysterious cases by his own “bio-intelligence”.
However I do like this new Christmas special though Sherlock is still shuffling
between different ages through the power of “morphine or cocaine”.
Regardless of all other elements in the new episode, there
is a complete case which happened and was solved in one place through the classic
Sherlock’s fashion -- Sherlock found the answer of how the mysterious Abominable
Bride case could happen by using his own wisdom without any assistance of unconvincing
fictitious power. This is the core of this drama. If Sherlock is no longer
doing his job in his way, then he is no longer Sherlock Holmes.
And I like the idea of having Moriarty disturbing Sherlock’s
life in any ages from the 19th century to 21st century. The
fate of the two characters is twisted together and wresting wherever they goes.
The logic make sense to me as it reminds me of the fight between good and evil
no matter which age we are in.
The only funny thing is that Sherlock was shifting between different
ages by using drugs. Is it? I could not help thinking that whether this implies
that all these stories are actually illusions of Sherlock because of the drugs
he is taking. That’s to say, this Sherlock in the 21st century is actually
insane as he has to take drugs to fulfil his crave of wonderful cases that
could challenge his wonderful brain? I believe the director did not intend to
deliver this message though. But I do know that in reality some wonderful
talents do love to take drugs to get their inspirations.
All in all, I like this new episode. Mr. Holmes, I don’t
mind you travelling between different worlds and space like Dr. Who as long as
you are doing your job you suppose to do. Keep up the good work and looking
forward to more interesting stories from you!
