Fork, the new realm of Emoji

My x-agency friend posted some photos on WeChat just now. They immediately captured my attention.

Obviously she made it on her own. According to the clue on the image I found the APP in Apple store - Fork, a APP which allows you to create comic book of your own.

Aren't they amazing!

To me, this is absolutely a new realm of emoji, an upgraded version of ‘emotionalized’ life story telling -- instead of mixing your text with a string of emoji icons the text box, now you can add comic icons into your photos. Through the editing, normal photos are now transformed into an interesting comic book with a completely personalized story line.

Naturally I start to think about the opportunities for brands. Some of the pioneer brands have already started working with WeChat in creating emoji which are often playing around the product. A good example is DoubleMint. If the Fork APP goes well, probably brands could consider working with them by providing fans more product related comic elements for their life comic book creation.

While GIF is trending now on social media, I’d hope that Fork would soon provide the possibility of creating gif images in which these comic elements could do a bit of motion. Emm, is that too much in one photo? Well, you never know until you try them.

Make your life a comic book – Fork, provided by Blink Academy Ltd., a Chinese start-up based in Beijing. I love it. Here is their website: http://dafork.com/ . And below is my comic photo! Ha!

  2. Very interesting. Although I keep wondering whether this type of app is a bit too 'niche' - only attractive to those who're into manga/ animation. It does feel quite complicated to use /become a mass trend. What do you think?

    1. Good question Suzzane.

I agree that comic book is not for everyone. The core target audience of the APP could be those younger generations who are influenced by comic TV or books and those who are open to comic book treatment and wants to express sth on their own.

Seems that the company is aware that the APP is challenging to people who are not that good at making a comic book from scratch as well as the diversified favorability to these comic icons. The company has just launched a new feature which include a set of pre-built templates to make the process much less demanding and much faster. In the templates users could choose very basic templates with simple visual enhancement elements or advanced templates which include elements that would change the stories in the pictures.
